Three Parks, Three Recoveries
Part 1 Volcanoes (3 Nights)
Part 2 Nyungwe Forest (3 Nights)
Part 3 Akagera (4 Nights)

Three national parks in one small country, each of them a documented recovery. Volcanoes, where the mountain gorilla population has risen from a few hundred. Nyungwe, a montane rainforest with chimpanzees and colobus troops several hundred strong. And Akagera, which in 2010 had no lions, no rhino and almost no future, and is now Rwanda's Big Five park and close to self-financing.

The question it answers

You want to see conservation that can be audited rather than described, and you would rather spend ten nights in one small country than three days each in three large ones.

The Journey, in Three Parts

Gorillas first while legs are fresh, rainforest as decompression, then the savannah that could not have been written fifteen years ago.

1200×750A gorilla family, and the Fossey campus
Part One
Volcanoes
3 Nights · Bisate

The mountain gorilla population risen from a few hundred — a habituated family, the Dian Fossey Fund's research campus, and golden monkeys.

1200×750Chimpanzees and the canopy walkway
Part Two
Nyungwe Forest
3 Nights · Nyungwe House

A montane rainforest inside a working tea estate — chimpanzee tracking, colobus troops several hundred strong, and sixty metres up on the canopy walkway.

1200×750Rwanda's only Big Five park, rebuilt
Part Three
Akagera
4 Nights · Magashi

A savannah park rebuilt from near-collapse since 2010 — lions reintroduced in 2015, rhino from 2017, and roughly 80% self-financing. Four nights to see the operation, not its outputs.

Day by Day

A working frame, not a fixed route — every day here can be resequenced around you.

Part 1 — Volcanoes

Days 1 – 3

1600 × 610 pxThe terraced hills and rainforest of Volcanoes National Park · cover for Days 1–3
01Day
Arrival · Kigali & Volcanoes

Arrive Kigali (KGL). Time at the Kigali Genocide Memorial before leaving the city. Road transfer to Bisate, around two and a half hours. Afternoon on the reforestation site.

02Day
Gorilla trek

Briefing at park headquarters, then the trek — steep, usually wet, and an hour with a habituated family at the end of it. Afternoon: rest.

03Day
Karisoke

Morning at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, a working research institution holding decades of continuous data on individual families. Afternoon: golden monkey trek, or the hike to Dian Fossey's tomb.

Part 2 — Nyungwe Forest

Days 4 – 6

1600 × 610 pxMontane rainforest, tea estates and the canopy walkway · cover for Days 4–6
04Day
Transfer to Nyungwe

Charter to Kamembe, or the road along Lake Kivu. One&Only Nyungwe House sits inside a working tea estate on the forest boundary. Afternoon walking the tea and the processing works.

05Day
Chimpanzees

A pre-dawn start — they move fast and the trackers are out before you are. Afternoon: the canopy walkway, sixty metres above the forest floor.

06Day
The forest

Morning with the Angolan colobus troops, which here run to several hundred animals. Afternoon: waterfall walk, or time with the Nyungwe research team.

Part 3 — Akagera

Days 7 – 11

1600 × 610 pxThe Akagera lakes and northern plains, Rwanda's Big Five park · cover for Days 7–11
07Day
Transfer to Akagera

Charter from Kamembe to Akagera, around ninety minutes. Wilderness Magashi on the Lake Rwanyakazinga peninsula. Afternoon boat on the lake.

08Day
What African Parks did

A full day with the ecological monitoring team. African Parks took over management with the Rwanda Development Board in 2010. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, eastern black rhino in 2017, and seventy white rhino were translocated from South Africa in 2025. Tourism revenue now covers around 80 per cent of the park's costs. Every one of those figures is published and dated.

09Day
Rhino & rangers

Morning with the rhino monitoring team or the canine anti-poaching unit — the K9 programme is one of the reasons the reintroductions have held. Afternoon drive across the northern plains.

10Day
Big Five day

A full day. Akagera is now Rwanda's only Big Five park, a sentence that could not have been written fifteen years ago. Sundowners on the lake.

11Day
Departure

Charter or road to Kigali (KGL), around two and a half hours by road.

The Reasoning

Why this sequence

Volcanoes first, while legs are fresh and altitude has not accumulated — the gorilla trek is the hardest physical day of the ten. Nyungwe in the middle, because a rainforest is the right decompression between two open landscapes and the chimpanzee trek is easier after a week at altitude than before it.

Akagera last and longest at four nights, because it is the argument: a savannah park in a country nobody associates with savannah, rebuilt inside fifteen years, and four nights is what it takes to see the operation rather than its outputs.

The route is light for a three-park journey: two charters, or one charter and one long road transfer, with no international sectors and no border crossings. Around half a day of the ten nights is movement.

"Akagera is now Rwanda's only Big Five park — a sentence that could not have been written fifteen years ago."

Rwanda's two dry seasons

The gorilla and chimpanzee trails are steep and volcanic and wet-season mud is a real consideration. Akagera works year-round and is strongest for game viewing in the drier months.

The low-season case

The Rwanda Development Board's discounted permit applies only in the November-to-May low season, which is a genuine argument for the December-to-February window — combined with lower lodge rates, it is materially cheaper.

Indicative Investment
From
$20,150
per person sharing
Land cost$18,500
Permits$1,650
Ten nights, travelling June to September or December to February, per person sharing. Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are shown separately and are not inside the land figure. One gorilla permit at $1,500 and one chimpanzee permit are assumed. In the low season the RDB's conditional reduction brings the permit line to roughly $1,200.

What drives this price

Rwanda's pricing is unusual in Africa because so much of it is set by government rather than by operators. The gorilla permit is $1,500 per person per trek, fixed by the Rwanda Development Board, and no operator can discount, negotiate or absorb it — though the government itself offers a conditional reduction for travellers who also visit Akagera and Nyungwe outside the peak, which is precisely the shape of this journey. Beyond the permits the land cost is moderate by East African standards: distances are short, there are no long charters, and lodge supply is competitive. The result is a journey whose cost is front-loaded into government fees that fund the conservation it is built to show you — as direct a line between what is paid and what it buys as exists anywhere in this section.

Fit

What this is not

Not a Big Five spectacle route in the way the Mara or the Sabi Sand is, and Akagera should not be sold as their equal — the game is genuinely recovered and genuinely good, but the densities are not comparable.

Not a route for limited mobility, given two treks on steep forest terrain. And not a beach-adjacent journey.

Adaptations

This is a starting point, not a product — three directions it commonly moves in.

Shorter

Seven nights, Volcanoes and Akagera only, dropping the forest leg.

Low season

The same route in January or February, with the discounted permit and lower lodge rates.

Add Tanzania

Connect to the Serengeti via Kilimanjaro for a longer East African journey.

Frequently Asked

The questions that decide this route.

Is Rwanda worth visiting beyond gorilla trekking?
Yes. Nyungwe is a montane rainforest with chimpanzees and large colobus troops, and Akagera is a savannah park rebuilt from near-collapse — it now holds all of the Big Five, having had no lions until 2015 and no rhino until 2017.
What happened at Akagera National Park?
African Parks took over management with the Rwanda Development Board in 2010. Lions were reintroduced in 2015, eastern black rhino in 2017, and seventy white rhino were translocated from South Africa in 2025. Tourism revenue now covers around 80 per cent of the park's running costs.
When is gorilla trekking cheapest in Rwanda?
Between November and May, when the Rwanda Development Board offers a conditional reduction on the $1,500 permit for travellers who also visit Akagera and Nyungwe. Lodge rates are lower in the same window.
