A Beach Leg That Is a Real Destination
Part 1 Lion Sands, Sabi Sand (4 Nights)
Part 2 Blue Bay, Mauritius (7 Nights)

Four nights in the Sabi Sand at a lodge built for families, including a night in a treehouse on a raised deck in the middle of the reserve. Then a week on a peninsula in southern Mauritius with three beaches and a marine park off the front. No light aircraft anywhere on the route, and everything included at both ends.

The question it answers

You want a family safari that ends somewhere the children will actually want to stay, and you want the beach leg to be a real destination rather than an afterthought.

The Journey, in Two Parts

A family-built safari first, then a marine-park peninsula long enough to be a real stay.

1200×750A treehouse sleepout in the middle of the reserve
Part One
Lion Sands · Sabi Sand
4 Nights · Lion Sands River Lodge

Family-configured vehicles, a children's programme, a bush walk pitched at small things — and a private night in a treehouse on a raised deck under net and stars.

1200×750Three beaches, a marine park, all-inclusive
Part Two
Blue Bay, Mauritius
7 Nights · Shandrani Beachcomber

A peninsula in southern Mauritius with a marine park off the front and a kids' club from age three — everything included, and a twenty-minute airport transfer.

Day by Day

A working frame, not a fixed route — every day here can be resequenced around you.

Part 1 — Lion Sands, Sabi Sand

Days 1 – 4

1600 × 610 pxThe Sabie River at Lion Sands, the treehouse decks · cover for Days 1–4
01Day
Arrival · Sabi Sand

Arrive Johannesburg (JNB), connect to Skukuza (SZK). Lion Sands River Lodge on the Sabie River. Lunch, then a first drive with a family-configured vehicle and a ranger used to working with children.

02Day
First full safari day

Morning drive at sunrise, back for a long brunch. Midday by the pool above the river. Afternoon tea, then the second drive with sundowners in the bush.

03Day
Small things

Morning bush walk focused on tracks, dung, insects and medicinal plants — where children engage far more than they do from a vehicle. Midday: the lodge's children's programme. Afternoon drive.

04Day
Treehouse sleepout

Morning drive, afternoon at leisure. After the evening drive, transfer to one of the lodge's treehouses for a private night on a raised deck in the middle of the reserve, under mosquito net and stars. Pre-booking essential. This replaces the fourth night at the lodge rather than adding to it.

Part 2 — Blue Bay, Mauritius

Days 5 – 12

1600 × 610 pxThe Blue Bay Marine Park, three beaches and Île aux Aigrettes · cover for Days 5–12
05Day
Transfer to Mauritius

Wake in the treehouse, breakfast back at the lodge, then Skukuza to Johannesburg and the flight to Mauritius (MRU). Road transfer to Blue Bay, around 20 minutes — the shortest airport transfer of any beach leg in the section.

06Day
The peninsula

Settle. Three beaches, a marine park off the front, and the kids' club open from age three. Nothing scheduled for the adults.

07Day
Blue Bay Marine Park

Snorkelling in the marine park, which holds over thirty coral species and seventy-odd fish species in shallow, calm water — the best introduction to a reef a child is likely to get. Glass-bottom boat for younger ones.

08Day
Inland Mauritius

A day trip inland: Chamarel's coloured earths and waterfall, the Black River Gorges, and the tortoises at Vanille. The island is genuinely interesting beyond the beaches and one day out is worth it.

09Day
On the water

Catamaran along the south-east coast with snorkelling stops, or diving for certified family members. Afternoon back at the resort.

10Day
Île aux Aigrettes

Morning at Île aux Aigrettes, a coral island nature reserve in Mahébourg bay where the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation has rebuilt native forest and reintroduced pink pigeons and Aldabra tortoises. It is the one place on the island where the extinction story is told properly, and it lands with children.

11Day
Last full day

Watersports, the beach, a final family dinner. Everything is included, which on the eleventh day of a family holiday is not a small thing.

12Day
Departure

Road transfer to Mauritius (MRU).

The Reasoning

Why this sequence

Safari first, for the same reason as every bush-and-beach route in the section, but the beach leg here is doing more work than usual. Seven nights rather than four because a family needs a real stretch of unstructured time after four days of five o'clock starts, and because Mauritius has enough beyond the beach that older children do not run out of things to do.

Lion Sands is chosen over a remoter camp deliberately: family-configured, the treehouses, and a short transfer from a scheduled airstrip, which matters more with children than any amount of remoteness.

The transit is the lightest in the section: two flights and two short road transfers, no charter at any point, with around half a day of the eleven nights spent moving.

"Everything included, which on the eleventh day of a family holiday is not a small thing."

When to Travel
May to
September
Bush dry, Mauritian winter

May to September for the bush leg, when grass is down and viewing is strongest. Mauritius is at its best from May to December; the January-to-March cyclone season is a hard constraint rather than a preference. May to September is the overlap and is the Mauritian winter — warm, dry, and cooler in the water than the photography implies.

Indicative Investment
From
$7,200
per person sharing
Eleven nights, travelling May to September. The beach leg is taken on an all-inclusive basis, so meals, most drinks and activities are inside the figure at both ends. Figures are in US dollars, per person sharing, based on two adults travelling in the named season.

What drives this price

This route is affordable for the same reason Marataba to the Cape is, and the comparison is worth drawing. There is no light-aircraft charter anywhere on it. Mauritius has a mature, competitive resort market with real supply, unlike an island with one property on it. The connection between the legs is a scheduled commercial flight rather than a charter. And the beach leg is all-inclusive, which removes the meal, drink and activity costs a family would otherwise meet daily on arrival. Set against Desert, Delta and Falls — same continent, similar length, around ten thousand dollars more per person — almost the entire difference is aviation and bed caps.

Fit

What this is not

Not a wilderness itinerary and not a remote one: the Sabi Sand is a short transfer from a scheduled airstrip and Shandrani is a resort. If the family wants genuine bush isolation this is the wrong page.

And it is not the malaria-free option. Malaria risk in the Greater Kruger is highest during the hot, wet summer months of roughly November to April, and lowest in the dry winter months this route travels in — but risk is present year-round and prophylaxis is commonly advised. If avoiding it entirely is the deciding factor, Marataba to the Cape is the honest answer.

Adaptations

This is a starting point, not a product — three directions it commonly moves in.

Malaria risk minimised

Marataba in place of the Lion Sands leg, at a lower rate.

Shorter

Nine nights, four and five.

Five-star beach

Beachcomber Trou aux Biches or Paradis in place of Shandrani, at around $1,800 more per person.

Frequently Asked

The questions that decide this route.

Is a safari and Mauritius holiday good for children?
It works well when the beach leg is long enough to be a real stay. Four nights on safari and seven in Mauritius gives children time to settle, and an all-inclusive basis removes the daily costs a family would otherwise meet on arrival.
Is there malaria in the Kruger?
Risk is present year-round and is highest in the hot, wet summer months of roughly November to April. This route travels in the dry winter, when risk is lowest, but prophylaxis is commonly advised. Seek current medical advice before travelling.
What is the cheapest safari and beach holiday?
Routes with no light-aircraft charter and a competitive beach market. This journey runs from around $7,200 per person for eleven nights, against roughly $18,000 for a comparable-length fly-in Botswana itinerary.
