What Twenty Years Did to the Land
Part 1 Grumeti Reserve (6 Nights)
Part 2 Ngorongoro Crater (3 Nights)

In 2002 the Grumeti Reserve in the western Serengeti was a poached-out hunting block. It now runs to 350,000 acres, carries black rhino and one of the highest lion densities in Tanzania, and supports an anti-poaching operation that publishes its numbers. Six nights there is long enough to see the operation instead of being briefed on it.

The question it answers

You want the Serengeti without the migration circus, and you want to understand what a twenty-year conservation lease actually did to a piece of land.

The Journey, in Two Parts

Six nights where the conservation record is measurable, then the crater as a land-sharing case.

1200×750The western corridor, a fraction of the vehicles
Part One
Grumeti Reserve
6 Nights · Faru Faru & Sasakwa

A 350,000-acre private concession bordering the Serengeti with no fences — black rhino, one of Tanzania's highest lion densities, and a Fund that publishes its anti-poaching figures.

1200×750Six hundred metres above the floor
Part Two
Ngorongoro Crater
3 Nights · Crater Lodge

The only place in Tanzania where wildlife and Maasai pastoralism share protected land — a full day on the floor, Olduvai Gorge, and the tensions in that arrangement taken seriously.

Day by Day

A working frame, not a fixed route — every day here can be resequenced around you.

Part 1 — Grumeti Reserve

Days 1 – 6

1600 × 610 pxThe Grumeti River and the western corridor, riding on the plains · cover for Days 1–6
01Day
Arrival · Grumeti

Arrive Kilimanjaro and fly by light aircraft to the Sasakwa airstrip. Singita Faru Faru sits on the Grumeti River. An afternoon drive.

Flight to Kilimanjaro (JRO) · light aircraft to Sasakwa.
02Day
The western corridor

Morning and afternoon drives across the corridor. The reserve is a private concession bordering the Serengeti with no fences between them, so the wildlife is the Serengeti's while the vehicle density is a fraction of it.

In the reserve.
03Day
The Fund

A full day with the Grumeti Fund: the anti-poaching unit, the canine detection team and the ecological monitoring programme. The Fund publishes annual figures on snares removed, arrests made and population trends — which is the difference between a conservation claim and a conservation record.

In the reserve. Subject to the Fund's operational schedule.
04Day
Rhino and the plains

A morning in the black rhino reintroduction area with the monitoring team. The afternoon moves up to Sasakwa on its hill, and riding out across the plains, which is rare in East Africa and exceptional here.

In the reserve. Camp change within the concession.
05Day
On foot

A morning walking safari. The afternoon goes to the Fund's environmental education centre, which takes several thousand Tanzanian schoolchildren a year and is the part of the operation with the longest time horizon.

In the reserve.
06Day
Full day

A full day in the reserve with a picnic. Between June and August the migration passes through the corridor and the Grumeti River crossings happen here — quieter, and far less photographed, than those on the Mara River.

In the reserve.
Part 2 — Ngorongoro Crater

Days 7 – 10

1600 × 610 pxThe crater rim and floor, Olduvai Gorge and the Shifting Sands · cover for Days 7–10
07Day
Fly to Ngorongoro

Light aircraft from Sasakwa to Lake Manyara, then the road up to the crater rim. An afternoon on the rim, six hundred metres above the floor.

Light aircraft · road transfer to the rim, approx. 2 hours.
08Day
The crater as a conservation case

A full day on the floor. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the only place in Tanzania where wildlife and Maasai pastoralism share protected land, and the tensions in that arrangement are real and worth understanding. Spend the day with that in mind instead of ticking species.

Descent to the crater floor. Crater service fee included.
09Day
Olduvai and community

A morning at Olduvai Gorge and the Shifting Sands. The afternoon is a Maasai community visit through the Africa Foundation, the community partner attached to the lodge.

Road, roughly an hour each way.
10Day
Departure

Road to Lake Manyara or Arusha, and the connection to Kilimanjaro.

Road transfer · flight from Kilimanjaro (JRO).
The Reasoning

Why this sequence

Six nights in one reserve is the argument. Grumeti is where the conservation record is measurable, and measurable takes time to see — three nights lets a traveller be told about the anti-poaching unit, six lets them spend a morning with it.

The crater comes last and short, at three nights, because two descents is the useful maximum. Putting it last also ends the journey two hours from an international airport instead of at a bush strip. The route barely moves: one light-aircraft sector between the legs and one road transfer to the rim, with under half a day of the nine nights spent in transit.

"The difference between a conservation claim and a conservation record is that one of them publishes its numbers."

When to Travel
June to
October
Grass down, game concentrated

For the western corridor, when the grass is down and the game concentrates. This route is deliberately built so that it does not depend on the migration, which means it still works in a year when the herds are late — and most years they are.

A strong alternative

January to March, with excellent crater viewing and the calving season within reach.

Indicative Investment
From
$25,400
per person sharing
Nine nights, travelling June to October. All Tanzanian park, concession and crater service fees are included. Figures are in US dollars, per person sharing, based on two travelling in the named season.

  • Tanzanian park, concession & crater fees
  • Internal light-aircraft transfers
  • Road transfers between properties

What drives this price

Tanzania is expensive for a reason that is unusual in the region: the traveller pays two land charges instead of one. Government park, concession and crater service fees are high, charged per person per day, and levied on top of everything else — at Ngorongoro the crater service fee alone is a meaningful daily line. Grumeti then adds its own private concession lease economics on top of the state charge. That stacking is the honest explanation for why Tanzania sits above Kenya on a like-for-like basis, and why a Tanzanian rate that looks high next to a South African one is not a margin difference.

Fit

What this is not

Not a migration-chasing itinerary. If river crossings are the reason for the trip, The Migration, Privately is built for exactly that and this route is not.

Also not a journey of varied landscape — two stops across nine nights, both of them grassland at altitude.

Adaptations

This is a starting point, not a product — three directions it commonly moves in.

Add the coast

Three or four nights at Mnemba after the crater.

Shorter

Seven nights, five at Grumeti and two at the crater.

Migration-weighted

A northern Serengeti camp for two of the Grumeti nights, in August or September.

Frequently Asked

The questions that decide this route.

Can you see the Serengeti without the migration crowds?
Yes. The Grumeti Reserve in the western corridor is a private concession bordering the national park with no fences between them, so the wildlife is the Serengeti's while the vehicle density is a fraction of it.
Why is a Tanzanian safari more expensive than a Kenyan one?
Tanzania levies high government park, concession and crater fees per person per day, on top of the lodge rate. On a private concession the traveller pays both a state charge and a lease-based rate — two land charges instead of one.
How many days do you need at Ngorongoro Crater?
Two or three nights. The crater floor is a single day's game viewing and two descents is the useful maximum; the surrounding conservation area and Olduvai Gorge justify the additional time.
