The Okavango Delta is a varied ecosystem of islands and oxbow waterways located in the heart of Botswana, one of Africa’s most extraordinary places. Waters from the far-away mountains of Angola are carried more than 1000 km south into Botswana, covering between 6,000 km² and 15,000 km² (affected by seasonal flooding) of the Kalahari Desert. The Kavango River rushes along old hippo paths, flowing and filtering through the papyrus swamps and palm groves, fanning out to form channels and islands as it creates the largest and most beautiful oasis in Africa. Thousands of animals migrate to this veritable paradise each year and the staggeringly beautiful oasis supports a huge diversity of wildlife. As such, this exclusive region, which was appointed a World Heritage Site in 2014, offers a unique safari experience.

During the wet season, wildlife activities are predominated by Mokoro (dug-out canoe) adventures and boat cruises through the vast Delta channels. 4X4 game drives and bush walks are also common in the dryer areas. As well as vast herds of elephants, all the Big Five are present, as well as many other unusual animals seldom seen elsewhere, and watching them as they cope with the wet conditions is enthralling – imagine a Lion hunting through the water! Many thousands of Elephants pass through the flooded plains, in the winter months (from May to August), following ancient migration routes, and this is the best time of the year to view them in their masses.
The Okavango Delta stands as a crown jewel among Africa’s renowned safari destinations, providing a remarkable wildlife experience. The heart of the Okavango’s allure lies in its waterways, where travelers can explore by both boat and traditional mokoro (dugout canoes), or embark on thrilling game drives and walking safaris.
The best time to visit the Okavango Delta falls between June and October during the dry season, which is in fact when the waters are highest. Nevertheless, due to its enduring wetlands and thriving wildlife, the Okavango Delta offers a captivating safari experience throughout the entire year.
The most convenient way to get to the Okavango Delta is by air travel. Private airstrips are conveniently located near most lodges, allowing guests to fly directly from either Maun or Kasane. Additionally, the eastern part of the Delta can be reached directly from Maun by 4×4 vehicle.
The Okavango Delta boasts abundant and diverse wildlife, including iconic species such as elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, hippos, and rhinos. It also hosts the endangered African Wild Dog, with one of the highest pack densities on the continent, thanks to its rich ecosystems and protective measures.
