Destinations / Tanzania / Serengeti National Park
Serengeti National Park is famous for being home to the annual Wildebeest Migration, considered to be one of Africa’s most thrilling wildlife experiences. Endlessly repeating a cycle that is as old as time itself, the great wildebeest migration in Tanzania and Kenya provides a wildlife spectacle that is unparalleled anywhere else on the planet. The sheer number of animals who undertake this mammoth migration is staggering – we are talking of millions of animals in herds and columns that stretch as far as the eye can see. Along with approximately 1.7 million wildebeest, vast herds of zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, and eland as well as giraffe, kudu, and other antelope, make the perilous journey from Tanzania’s southern Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara and back, in search of water and food.
“So dynamic is this spectacle that it is often referred to as the Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth.”
Naturally, they are constantly followed by eager predators including lions, cheetahs, and leopards. The endless cycle starts when the latest batch (about 300,000) of Wildebeest calves are born in Feb/March each year. Soon seasonal water and grazing are exhausted and the animals start to move north, reaching the Mara River in northern Serengeti around June. So dynamic is this spectacle that it is often referred to as the Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth, and is undoubtedly one that should be experienced by any safari enthusiast at least once in their lives.
