Tanzania

From the sweeping plains of the Serengeti to the spice-scented shores of Zanzibar, Tanzania delivers some of the most dramatic and iconic safari experiences in Africa.

The greatest wildlife show on earth

Few destinations in the world can compare to the sheer scale and spectacle of Tanzania. Over a quarter of the country is designated as protected land, encompassing some of Africa’s most celebrated national parks as well as lesser-known gems rich in biodiversity and natural beauty.

The main stage is, of course, the legendary Serengeti. Picture endless golden grasslands, scattered granite outcrops, and lion prides resting beneath flat-topped acacia trees. This iconic landscape is also home to the Great Migration, where nearly two million wildebeest, accompanied by zebra and antelope, move in a dramatic annual cycle across the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. From powerful river crossings to calving season in the south, each phase of the migration offers its own unique thrills. While the Serengeti National Park itself is a popular destination, we often recommend private conservancies and remote luxury camps that allow for a more exclusive, crowd-free experience.

Together with nearby Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire, the Serengeti forms the heart of Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, a well-connected and incredibly rewarding route that’s ideal for those seeking variety and convenience with a high level of comfort.

For those looking to explore further, Southern Tanzania offers true wilderness. In Ruaha and Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous), you’ll find fewer lodges, outstanding guiding, and a raw, authentic safari atmosphere. Even farther afield in Western Tanzania, the remote Katavi National Park hosts massive buffalo herds and predator action, while the nearby Mahale Mountains provide one of the best opportunities for chimpanzee trekking anywhere in Africa, set on the tranquil shores of Lake Tanganyika.

When to visit Tanzania

Tanzania is a rewarding destination year-round, but the dry season from June to October is considered the best time for classic safaris. During this period, wildlife is easier to spot as animals congregate around water sources, and the landscape is open and golden.

If you’re planning around the Great Migration, June and July are particularly dramatic, with river crossings in the northern Serengeti offering unforgettable scenes. Meanwhile, January and February mark the calving season in the southern Serengeti, an incredible time to witness new life and predator-prey interactions under wide-open skies.
