To the south, the Lower Zambezi National Park lies opposite Mana Pools in Zimbabwe, offering stunning riverfront settings and a mix of safari activities, from game drives to canoeing, fishing, and walking. With dramatic escarpments and floodplains, it’s one of the most scenic parks in the region, ideal for photographers and active adventurers.
For the curious and adventurous, Zambia holds remarkable off-the-beaten-path gems. In Kafue National Park, one of Africa’s largest, expect wild, untouched terrain and superb wildlife viewing with barely another vehicle in sight. The remote Liuwa Plain, home to Africa’s second-largest wildebeest migration and just one permanent lodge, is a dream for those craving space and solitude. North Luangwa, even wilder than its southern sibling, is the preserve of serious safari-goers, offering rare species and thrilling walking safaris with some of the continent’s best guides.
No visit to Zambia is complete without experiencing the Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders.” Stay in a luxury lodge along the Zambezi River near Livingstone, where activities range from scenic flights and white-water rafting to simply soaking in the splendour of this natural wonder.
Zambia’s safari seasons are closely tied to the rains. Most national parks are inaccessible from December to March, when heavy rains turn roads into mud and lodges close.
From April to May, the country begins to dry out, and by June to August, clear skies, cool nights and active wildlife make for ideal safari conditions, this is Zambia’s peak season. As temperatures rise from September to November, vegetation thins and animals congregate around remaining water sources, making for spectacular game viewing, particularly in South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi.
