Sossusvlei

Your Journey To Sossusvlei Begins Here.

Sossusvlei is an iconic natural attraction in the Namib Desert, one of the most breathtaking places in Namibia for its stunning red sand dunes and salt pans. It is where many of those visiting hope to capture photographs of awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets against the imposing sand dunes. Most dunes are a vivid pink-to-orange color, caused by a high concentration of iron in the sand, with the oldest ones having a more intense reddish color. They are among the highest in the world, reaching heights of over 300 meters (984 feet). Some have been provided nicknames, such as the ‘Big Daddy’, ‘Elim Dune’, and ‘Dune 45’. Adjacent to Sossusvlei is Deadvlei, another mesmerizing salt pan surrounded by towering dunes. This dried-up ancient clay pan has the skeletal remains of dead acacia trees providing a surreal contrast against the white clay and red sand dunes.

While the Namib Desert may appear barren and desolate, Sossusvlei and its surroundings are home to a surprising array of wildlife. You’ll encounter oryx, springbok, ostriches, and various reptiles. Including the Peringuey’s Adder, a venomous snake with a sand-colored appearance that helps it remain camouflaged in the desert dunes. In certain regions of the Namib Desert, particularly around the Huab River and Hoanib River, you’ll find desert-adapted elephants. These elephants have developed unique behaviors and physiological adaptations to thrive in arid conditions.
