Destinations / South Africa / Madikwe Game Reserve
Malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve has a unique location in the northwest region of South Africa, bordering Botswana and on the edge of the Kalahari. It is South Africa’s fifth-largest reserve, covering 75,000 hectares. The reserve was established in 1991 as a collaborative conservation effort between the government, local communities, and private stakeholders. It was created by transforming farmland into a wildlife reserve to promote biodiversity conservation and provide economic opportunities for the surrounding communities through eco-tourism. Madikwe’s location next to the Kalahari provides diverse landscapes, including open plains, woodlands, and rocky hills. To the south, the majestic Dwarsberg Mountains form a natural boundary.
“Madikwe is also one of the best reserves in South Africa to see wild dogs, where the resident pack provides superb sightings.”
Within the reserve, the prominent Madikwe dam serves as a focal point, drawing both wildlife and visitors alike. Regarded as one of the best conservation areas in Africa, here you can have a comprehensive Big Five safari experience. Giraffes, hippos, cheetahs, spotted hyenas as well as the rare brown hyena are all present as well. Madikwe is also one of the best reserves in South Africa to see wild dogs, where the resident pack provides superb sightings. Although there is less wildlife than in the Greater Kruger private reserves, Madikwe benefits from having fewer vehicles around, resulting in more time to enjoy the wildlife sightings.
Madikwe stands as a testament to the successful collaboration between conservation, tourism, and local communities. It offers a remarkable wildlife experience in a malaria-free zone, making it a popular destination for family safaris.
The best time to visit Madikwe depends on your preferences and what you want to experience during your safari. Madikwe has a pleasant climate year-round, but the Dry Season (May to September) is considered the best time for wildlife viewing.
The most convenient way to reach Madikwe Game Reserve is by charter flight, directly to one of the private airstrips within the reserve. Self-drive or a transfer from Johannesburg to the reserve is also an option and takes around 4-5 hours.
Madikwe is home to an impressive array of wildlife, including the renowned Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros, and buffalo). It also boasts a high concentration of game, including giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, cheetahs, and hyenas.
